Let me help you get to know a bit more about the
past...and the present! You will find here details of talks, walks and lectures on history and archaeology in Sussex and Hampshire.
My name is John Manley. I am a
professional archaeologist and Trustee
of the Sussex Archaeological Society. I've excavated
at Fishbourne Roman
Palace near Chichester and I've also dug in a
number of countries including Iran, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Jordan, South Africa and the Caribbean.
In 2012 I published a book on The Archaeology of the South Downs National Park (available from www.sussexpast.co.uk). Two more of my books - The Romans (Hodder) and A Walking Guide to the Archaeology of the South
Downs National Park(The History Press) were published in 2013. My book on Archaeology (Hodder) came out in 2014. In 2016 I edited two books on aspects of the cultural history of the SD National Park - one on Traditional Homes and one on the Secrets of the High Woods project. A new book on Churches in the National Park appeared in 2017.
I set up TimeTalks to provide an interesting
and engaging talk or walk in Sussex
and Hampshire that can be tailored to the
interests of your Group, Society
or Organisation. I try to bring the past, its
archaeology and history, alive in
an entertaining way. The past is often unnoticed
although always present in our lives. And to quote the opening line of Hartley's novel - 'The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there'. My goal is both to illustrate how the past
shapes our present, and how our present differs from our past.
I look forward to hearing from you!
